Video: CEO Coaching Explained
In CEO coaching, the traditional approach often positions the coach as a fixer—diagnosing problems and offering solutions. However, the most transformative coaching begins differently. Rather than starting with what’s broken, executive leadership coaches like Geo K. Hunter ask CEOs to define their vision of greatness as a leader. This forward-looking approach shifts the dynamic from remediation to intentional development, enabling leaders to chart a clear path toward their full potential through structured goal-setting and measurable milestones.
Video Description
CEO coaching represents a fundamental shift in how leaders approach personal and organizational development. While many executives initially expect their coach to identify problems and prescribe fixes, the most effective CEO coaching relationships begin with a deeper question: What does greatness look like for you as a leader?
This approach, championed by experienced executive coaches like Geo K. Hunter, transforms the coaching engagement from problem-focused to vision-focused. By helping CEOs articulate their definition of leadership greatness, coaches create a North Star against which all coaching work is measured. This clarity enables executives to move beyond reactive management and into intentional leadership strategy.
The process unfolds in phases. First, the CEO and coach define what excellence means in their specific context—whether that involves executive presence, cross-functional alignment, stakeholder influence, or strategic decision-making. Second, they identify the gaps between current performance and the envisioned future state. Finally, they establish measurable goals and milestones that serve as checkpoints for progress.
CEO coaching also addresses the unique pressures C-suite leaders face: isolated decision-making, stakeholder management, board dynamics, and rapid organizational change. Modern CEO coaches integrate frameworks for navigating AI transformation, change management, and enterprise complexity alongside traditional leadership development.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect in the first session of CEO coaching?
Your first CEO coaching session typically focuses on understanding your leadership context, career history, and vision for greatness. Rather than jumping into problem diagnosis, experienced coaches ask clarifying questions about your definition of excellent leadership, your organizational goals, and the gaps you perceive. This foundation allows the coach to design a customized coaching engagement that aligns with your strategic priorities.
How is CEO coaching different from business consulting?
CEO coaching is relationship-driven and deeply personal, focusing on the leader’s development, executive presence, and decision-making capacity. Business consulting typically addresses organizational systems, processes, or strategies. While coaching may inform business decisions, its primary aim is to enhance your leadership capability—your thinking, emotional intelligence, stakeholder relationships, and strategic vision. Coaches help you become the leader your organization needs.

A lot of times when we talk about executive coaching, it’s looking at the coach as a fixer, coming in to fix a problem, giving a fresh perspective and problem-solving. And that can happen, but the first question I ask a new CEO when I take them on as a coaching client is give me a vision of you as a great leader. And that usually makes them squirm at first, but if we can define what greatness means to them as a leader, then we can carve out a path, setting goals and milestones to reach their full potential.
